نائب وزير الدفاع السوري السابق درس التاريخ في جامعة دمشق. دخل الكلية الحربية ليتخرج منها ضابط برتبة ملازم بشهادة بكالوريس علوم عسكرية اختصاص مشاة، شارك في حرب تشرين 1973 ضد الجيش الإسرائيلي ودرس التاريخ في جامعة دمشق. في عام 1995 تزوج من بشرى الأسد ابنة الرئيس السوري السابق حافظ الأسد وشقيقة الرئيس السوري بشار الأسد، عين عام 2005 مديراً للاستخبارات العسكرية التي تعد أقوى الأجهزة الأمنية في سوريا. رفع إلى رتبة عماد في تموز/يوليو 2009 وأصبح نائبًا لرئيس الأركان، وفي آب/أغسطس 2011 تم تعيينه نائبا لوزير الدفاع. أعلن عن مقتله يوم 18 تموز/يوليو 2012 في تفجير مبنى الأمن القومي السوري بحزب البعث الحاكم في البلاد في انفجار استهدف مقر الأمن القومي بحزب البعث في دمشق، أثناء اجتماع وزراء ومسؤولين أمنيين كبار، خلال الأزمة السورية. والداه هما محمود شوكت وخديجة صالح، لديه ٥ إخوة ذكور آخرين، أحدهم يكبر “آصف” وهو “محمد” من مواليد 1947، ثم حيدر (1956)، فيصل (1958)، خالد (1963)، مفيد (1967)، وكلهم مقيدون بوصفهم من مواليد “المدحلة” في ريف طرطوس. لـ”آصف” أبناء من زوجته الأولى “سلام”، هم: ديما (1978)، زياد (1979، وهو الذي يكنى آصف باسمه فيدعى أبو زياد)، طارق (1982)، وحمزة (1983). فرضت عليه الخزانة الأمريكية عقوبات اقتصادية بتهم التنسيق مع منظمات تصنفها الولايات المتحدة على أنها إرهابية أهمها: حزب الله، الجبهة الشعبية القيادة العامة، الجهاد الإسلامي. وبأنه قابل قادتها: حسن نصر الله، أحمد جبريل، رمضان شلح. يضاف إلى ذلك دوره الكبير في تعزيز نفوذ وسطوة النظان السوري في لبنان، وقد أشار تقرير أصدرته الأمم المتحدة في أكتوبر 2005 لدوره في قضية مقتل الحريري. فرضت عليه العقوبات الأمريكية في 18/01/2006.

Assef Shawkat is the former Syrian Deputy Minister of Defence. He studied history at the University of Damascus. He was admitted to the Military Academy to become an Officer of the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and receive a Bachelor ’s Degree in Military Sciences with a Major in the Infantry. Shawkat participated in the October War in 1973 against the Israeli army. In 1995, he married Bushra al-Assad, daughter of the former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and sister to the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. In 2005, he was appointed Director of Military Intelligence, which is considered the strongest security service in Syria. In July 2009, Shawkat was promoted to Lieutenant General and became the Deputy Chief of Staff. In August 2011, he became Deputy Minister of Defence. On 18 July 2012, it was announced that Shawkat was killed in the bombing of the National Security Bureau headquarters in Damascus, which targeted a meeting of senior ministers and security officials. His parents are Mahmoud Shawkat and Khadija Salih. He has five brothers; one is older than him, Muhammad, born in 1947, and the others are Haydar (1956), Faisal (1958), Khaled (1963), and Mufid (1967). They all are registered as born in Madhala in Rural Tartous. Assef ’s children of his first wife Salam are Dima (1978), Ziad (1979), Tareq (1982), and Hamza (1983); Hence Assef is nicknamed Abu Ziad. On 18 January 2006, the US Department of the Treasury imposed economic sanctions against him for coordinating with organisations designated by the US as terrorist, among others Hezbollah, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC), and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), and for meeting Hezbollah Secretary-General Hasan Nasrallah, PFLP-GC Chief Ahmad Jibril, PIJ Secretary-General Ramadan Shallah. In addition, the Treasury highlighted that Shawkat was a key architect of Syria ’s domination and influence over Lebanon. A UN report issued in October 2005 also referred to Shawkat ’s role in al-Hariri ’s assassination case.
