#17: Does OpenSanctions use the same identifiers as Wikidata?

Category: Data structure · Last updated: · Permalink

Nicely spotted, yes! OpenSanctions uses Wikidata QIDs for all humans we've matched between both databases. This facilitates linking additional data from Wikidata or other databases using the same identification scheme.

  • Persons: Matched against Wikidata using QIDs.
  • Companies: Not matched against Wikidata. Companies are matched with databases like OpenCorporates. We don't match companies against Wikidata because we aim to reflect the legal identity of companies instead of their social identity as described in Wikidata.

For more details, read our documentation on identifiers.
